Dhabeji power failure pushes Karachi into deeper water crisis

A major power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station has severely disrupted water supply across Karachi, officials from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said on Wednesday.

According to Abdul Qadir Sheikh, the breakdown occurred at 11:30 pm on Tuesday (July 17) due to a fault in K-Electric’s power supply, causing a complete shutdown of the 100 MGD pump house, which is responsible for pumping 100 million gallons of water daily to the city.

More than 19 hours have passed since the fault occurred, but K-Electric has not been able to resolve the issue, the spokesperson said.

Adding to the crisis, both standby cables at the pumping station are also out of order, making alternative power arrangements out of the question.

“This failure is critically affecting water supply in most parts of Karachi,” the spokesperson added, urging citizens to conserve water and avoid unnecessary use until power is restored and pumping resumes.

KWSC officials remain in constant contact with K-Electric, stressing the urgency of restoring electricity to avoid a prolonged city-wide water shortage.
