Karachi safe city makes first arrest using surveillance cameras

Karachi Safe City arrest

The Karachi Safe City project recorded its first successful arrest using its surveillance system, arresting a suspect for driving with a fake number plate.

The vehicle was flagged in the Arambagh area using high-tech cameras that detected the fake number plate. The driver was taken into custody, and a case was registered.

Officials stated that this marks a major step forward in digital policing.

The operation followed a meeting chaired by Sindh’s Chief Minister, where strict orders were given to fully activate the camera network and pursue legal action against violators.

Director General Safe City Asif Ijaz Sheikh confirmed this was the first action led by the authority.

The Chief Minister also ordered the IG Sindh Police and DG Safe City to intensify camera-based enforcement and ensure 24/7 surveillance across the city.

Authorities say this technology will now be used to track vehicles involved in crimes, enforce traffic laws, and increase safety across Karachi.

Earlier in the day, Karachi Traffic Police has launched a crackdown on heavy vehicle drivers, conducting on-the-spot dope tests for the first time.

According to officials, medical lab staff are accompanying police teams to collect vehicle documents, licenses, and blood samples from drivers operating large trucks and buses across the city.

This initiative aims to identify and stop drivers using alcohol or other intoxicants while driving heavy vehicles.

A spokesperson for Karachi Traffic Police stated that those who test positive will face license cancellation and legal action as per the law.

The crackdown involves increased deployment of traffic personnel at key checkpoints and highways where heavy vehicles frequently travel.

“This medical screening is essential to ensure the physical and mental fitness of drivers, especially those operating dangerous, oversized vehicles in Karachi,” the spokesperson stated.

The police believe this step will reduce traffic accidents, especially fatal ones involving heavy transport.
