Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry discussed installing desalination plants at KPT in partnership with the Sindh government to address Karachi’s ongoing water shortage issues.
The desalination plants are planned to boost freshwater supply for homes and industries, especially around the Karachi Port area, where the need for clean water is growingly urgent.
This proposal was part of a high-level meeting held at the Sindh Investment Department between Minister Chaudhry and Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar.
The session covered several major development projects including road links to port areas, a truck logistics park, and strategies for promoting the blue economy and environmental conservation.
Minister Chaudhry emphasized that desalination plants are key for Karachi’s future, especially in areas close to the port where water needs are high and groundwater is scarce.
He stressed the importance of environmentally sound solutions that help both the public and industries thrive while reducing pressure on existing water resources in the region.
The leaders agreed that private sector investment and innovation should be encouraged to accelerate infrastructure development and support sustainable growth around Karachi’s port areas.
They also exchanged ideas on expanding the blue economy, aiming to use ocean resources responsibly for long-term economic benefit and environmental sustainability.
What are desalination plants?
Desalination plants are facilities that remove salt and impurities from seawater or brackish water to produce fresh water for human consumption or industrial use.
They use various processes, most commonly reverse osmosis or thermal desalination, to separate water molecules from salt and other dissolved substances.
