At least 33 people have been killed in street crime incidents in Karachi since January 2025, according to official police data shared by SSP Mohammed Shoaib Memon of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
Speaking at a press conference, SSP Memon said 23 of these cases have been solved, with suspects arrested, while 10 remain under investigation.
He claimed a 70 percent detection rate and asserted that none of the street criminals arrested last year by the SIU were granted bail by courts.
His statement opposed figures from independent organizations, which report 47 citizens killed by robbers during the same five-month period. SSP Memon rejected this higher toll and defended the official numbers.
Addressing another concern, he said the lack of drug courts has helped narcotics suspects secure bail. However, he confirmed that the Sindh Cabinet has decided to establish special drug courts for such trials.
The SIU has also taken action against drug traffickers, including a gang smuggling weed from California and another from Iran through Hub. A recent arrest of dealer Sajjad led to the recovery of weed worth Rs12 million and the identification of main dealer Hasnain Baloch.
He also confirmed the arrest of two robbers involved in the June 2024 killing of a citizen named Gulzar in Mominabad. The suspects had opened fire during a robbery, accidentally killing their own accomplice.
Regarding the case involving actor Sahir Hasan, the SIU chief said no leniency was shown in the charge sheet, but the accused were granted bail due to the absence of drug courts.
He added that three accused, including a bank manager, are still at large.
