The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has issued a high alert in anticipation of heavy monsoon rains expected in the city, ensuring comprehensive safety measures and emergency preparedness at the port.
KPT officials stated that advance arrangements have been finalized, including the safe berthing of vessels, monitoring of port operations, and standby pilot services to navigate ships into deep sea during severe weather conditions.
To handle emergencies, tugs, pilot boats, and shipping boats will remain ready for deployment. Small boats will be docked at low-pressure zones, and dredgers and barges have been securely tied.
Cargo protection has been prioritized. Tarpaulin covers are in place for all types of cargo, including vehicles, appliances, and high-value goods. Empty containers will be stacked only two units high to prevent toppling, while container yards and terminals are under strict safety protocols.
KPT has also emptied trenches and sump tanks near oil piers and issued alerts to monitor for gas leaks using flashlights only.
Orders have been issued to inspect and clear drainage systems, remove debris and hazardous items from rooftops, and prevent leakages through roof maintenance.
With stormy winds and lightning strikes predicted, the risk of power outages and transformer damage is high. Backup generators will be on standby, and Izhar Abbasi KPT Hospital has been equipped with emergency medicine supplies and uninterrupted power access.
Technical staff and a 24-hour support team will remain on duty. Ambulances and medical teams are stationed for emergencies, while fire hydrants and portable submersible pumps will be made available by the Port Fire Officer.
KPT’s Civil Defense Unit has also been alerted to stay ready with volunteers, ensuring swift action during potential emergencies.
KPT Hospital has been prepared to deal with any kind of emergency, in which the timely supply of a large number of medicines and related facilities has been ensured.
