$240mln approved for Karachi’s Water, Sanitation projects

Karachi water and sanitation project

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved $240 million in funding for the second phase of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP), aiming to transform the city’s struggling water and sanitation systems by 2030.

This investment builds upon an initial $40 million from phase one, and will help increase water availability, upgrade sewerage services, and strengthen the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) operationally and financially.

The project targets the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure and construction of new facilities, with the goal of providing safe water to 16 million people and better sanitation access to 10.4 million in Pakistan’s largest city by 2030.

The second phase will address Karachi’s acute water shortages, unsafe drinking water, and inadequate sewage treatment, with plans to upgrade water treatment plants, expand distribution, and improve waste systems.

Co-financed by the World Bank (WB), the project follows the AIIB’s Environmental and Social Framework to align with global environmental and social safeguards.

Officials believe this large-scale upgrade will improve public health, protect the environment, and raise the overall quality of life for millions in Karachi. It’s a significant step toward sustainable urban development and meeting the needs of a rapidly growing population.
