Heatwave Alert: Heatstroke toll surged to 605 in last 10 days

Sindh heatstroke cases May 2025

A severe heatwave gripping Sindh has led to 605 reported cases of heatstroke over the past ten days, with daytime temperatures forecast to remain 4 to 6°C above normal, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Driven by persistent high atmospheric pressure, the heatwave has raised concerns for public health across the province.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) shared alarming statistics, also confirming the death of 49 livestock – including 47 goats and sheep, and two cattle – due to extreme heat, however, no human fatalities have been reported.

As per the PDMA released data, 28 new heatstroke cases were recorded in the last 48 hours alone, reflecting the intensifying risk to human health.

The government has responded by setting up emergency heatstroke relief camps in major districts such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana, aiming to provide immediate care and hydration to those affected.

Health authorities have urged the public, especially children, elderly citizens, and women, to avoid going outdoors between 11 AM and 4 PM, remain well-hydrated, and avoid direct sunlight.

Outdoor workers, including farmers and daily wage earners, have been advised to adjust work hours and take frequent breaks in shaded areas to prevent overheating.

Veterinary services are also advising livestock owners to keep animals sheltered, provide constant access to water, and avoid long-distance movements during peak heat.

The PMD warns that the extreme temperatures may persist into early June, raising the urgency for strict public adherence to health advisories.
