Karachi to start issuing E-Challans using CCTV cameras

Karachi traffic challan cameras

Traffic police will soon start issuing E-challans in Karachi using surveillance cameras, announced DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah during a press briefing.

While talking to media at FBATI, DIG police stated that cameras are being installed across the city, and from next month, violations will be recorded and e-challans sent to offenders.

He also reminded that all heavy vehicles must be fitted with trackers and cameras by the June 1 deadline.

“In case of any traffic offence, a Rs 20,000 challan will be imposed on heavy transport vehicles (HTVs),” DIG said.

He further stated that the traffic police have been running awareness campaigns through media for the past two months to inform the public.

Karachi has over 7.8 million vehicles, including 4.4 million motorbikes, said DIG Shah. He pointed out that most fatal accidents involve motorcyclists, while 30-35% of victims are pedestrians.

Among heavy vehicles, trucks (17%), trawlers (14%), and dumpers (11%) are involved in deadly road accidents. The speed limit for HTVs in Karachi is 30 km/h, but speeding is a major issue.

The President of FBATI noted that water tankers are often involved in fatal accidents due to over-speeding, and he urged authorities to develop a strict system to control them.
