Karachi: Met office releases new cyclone update

Karachi cyclone

Karachi is dealing with severe heat as temperatures hit 33°C and may rise to 37°C later Thursday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

The department reported a low-pressure system over the east-central Arabian Sea, about 1,075 kilometers southeast of Karachi, which may develop into a depression within 36 hours.

Despite its movement toward the north, the Met Office clarified there is no cyclone threat to Karachi or any part of Pakistan’s coastal areas at the moment.

The Cyclone Warning Centre is monitoring the system closely. If it strengthens into a storm, it will be named “Shakti,” a name suggested by Sri Lanka.

Meteorologists say the system is currently located near India’s Karnataka and Goa coasts. If favorable conditions continue, it may become a deep depression or cyclone by May 24 or 25.

Even if the cyclone forms, experts have confirmed it will not affect Pakistan’s coastline, and residents should rely only on official weather updates.

Due to this system, sea breezes have picked up in Karachi. Wind speeds reached 30.6 kilometers per hour (17 nautical miles per hour) on Thursday afternoon.

Experts added that the system may lead to extremely hot weather in Karachi and could temporarily block sea breezes, making heatwaves more intense.
