Sindh announce public holiday on May 28

Youm-e-Takbeer public holiday

The Sindh government has declared May 28 a public holiday to commemorate Youm-e-Takbeer, marking Pakistan’s historic nuclear tests conducted in 1998.

A formal notification has been issued stating that all government and private institutions will remain closed across Sindh. The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) also confirmed that it will remain shut in observance of the day.

Youm-e-Takbeer public holiday

May 28 is already a gazetted holiday across Pakistan, as notified by the Cabinet Division earlier.

On this day in 1998, Pakistan became the seventh nuclear power in the world and the first in the Islamic world by conducting successful nuclear tests in the Ras Koh hills of Chaghai, Balochistan. The tests were carried out under the slogan “Allah-o-Akbar,” showcasing Pakistan’s strategic capability.

The tests were seen as a response to India’s nuclear test in 1974, which pushed Pakistan to accelerate its own nuclear programme.

According to officials, Youm-e-Takbeer reflects the country’s commitment to defend its sovereignty and maintain strategic balance in South Asia.
