Indian traders boycott Turkish apples over support for Pakistan

India boycott apples

Amid escalating Indo-Pakistan tensions, Indian traders have turned against Turkey after Ankara – the capital of Turkey – expressed support for Pakistan during the conflict.

The move has sparked a strong economic reaction, especially from fruit markets in Pune, where majority of traders boycott the Turkish apples.

The tension began after a deadly attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir.

In response, India launched airstrikes in Azad Kashmir and Punjab on the night of May 6-7, killing 31 Pakistani civilians, including children, and injuring 51 others.

Pakistan’s military responded by shooting down multiple Indian aircraft, including a Rafale, MiG-29, SU-30, and a combat drone.

On May 10, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos (Iron Wall), which further intensified the regional conflict. During this time, Turkey voiced diplomatic and moral support for Pakistan, triggering outrage in India.

According to Indian media reports, fruit traders in Pune have launched a boycott campaign against Turkish apples, claiming they cannot support trade with a country that sides against national interest.

Turkish apples, which contribute between Rs 1,000 to 1,200 crore in seasonal business, have now largely disappeared from Indian local markets.

One prominent apple trader in Pune confirmed the trend, saying, “We’ve stopped purchasing Turkish apples and have shifted our demand to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Iran, and other suppliers.”
