Indian Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said Pakistan is a country with a large and well-equipped army, adding that he has heard reports about its possession of highly advanced weapons.
In an interview, Tharoor cautioned the Indian government against further military action. “Some friends tell me Pakistan has the most advanced weapons. I don’t think the Modi government should take any more adventurous steps,” he said.
Tharoor recalled India’s 1971 victory under Indira Gandhi, calling it a proud moment. But he noted that the situation in 2025 is very different. “Bangladesh had a moral cause. This time, the clarity is missing,” he said.
Referring to the loss of lives in Poonch since the conflict began, Tharoor stressed that peace must now take priority.
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the crisis, Tharoor was careful with his words. “The people of India want peace and progress now. We should not risk more bloodshed,” he said.
Meanwhile, a ceasefire between India and Pakistan took effect on Saturday after a diplomatic push by U.S. President Donald Trump. Top military officials from both sides, the DGMOs, spoke soon after to ensure calm along the border.
