As tensions rise and the threat of aerial attacks increases, Aga Khan University’s Safety & Security Department has issued an updated safety guide to help citizens protect themselves during drone and missile strikes.
India is constantly escalating the tension by launching attacks in Pakistan. The Indian military launched a missile attack on three air bases inside Pakistan, including Sheikh Zayed Airport and Noor Khan Airbase, in the early hours of May 10.
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) successfully thwarted the attack, and no damage to air force assets was reported. However, here are some tips to stay safe during air strikes.
Take Shelter
The guide advises people to seek underground shelter – like basements or subway tunnels – when sirens or blasts are heard. Avoid windows, glass, and leaning against solid walls, which can shatter or collapse under pressure.
Take Cover
If you’re outside and can’t find shelter, the safest move is to lie flat in a low area like a ditch. Cover your head with your arms and keep your mouth slightly open to reduce lung damage from the blast.
Do cover your skin with jackets or even newspapers to prevent burns. Close your eyes to avoid debris and have plastic sheets and tape ready to protect windows in your home.
The citizens are advised to prepare emergency water, food, and shut off electricity and gas if needed.
Do Nots
The advisory also warns not to lean against walls, take photos of the attack, or gather in large open areas.
