Pipeline repairs at Karachi University expected to finish by Sunday

Karachi water supply

The Karachi water supply is expected to resume by Saturday night or Sunday morning, following urgent repair work on a damaged 84-inch PRCC pipeline.

During an exclusive interview with Times of Karachi, Superintendent Engineer at KWSC – Sheikh Tanveer Ahmed, stated that the pipe – Installed in 1971 – had reached the end of its concrete tensile lifespan, leading to the sudden rupture.

To begin repairs, supply was halted from the Dhabejee Pumping Station, which requires 17 hours to fully shut down due to high pressure.

Although engineers were given 96 hours to complete the work, orders from the MD KWSC and Karachi Mayor pushed for an earlier completion to minimize the disruption for residents.

“It completed its life. We are replacing the damaged area with Mild Steel Pipes (MS Pipes), which are more reliable,” he said.

He further added that a proposal to replace the entire weakened pipeline sections has been submitted and will be implemented after securing funds from the World Bank.

The same line experienced a leak earlier this year at another point, which was also repaired using MS pipes, meanwhile, no weak spots are visible, said Tanveer.

The water is likely to disrupt several areas of Karachi including, Landhi, Korangi, Old Saddar, Nazimabad, Pak Colony, Jamshed Town, and Gulshan Town.
