Labour Day
International Labour Day, celebrated globally on May 1, honors the contributions and rights of workers. The day traces its roots back to the Chicago protests of 1886, where laborers demanded a reduction in working hours from 14 to 8.
Those protests eventually turned violent, leading to several deaths, but marked a historic turning point for workers’ rights across the world. Since then, May 1 has been observed annually as Labour Day.
In Pakistan, Labour Day was officially recognized in 1972 after the introduction of the country’s first Labour Policy.
Since then, the day has been marked through seminars, rallies, and various events aimed at promoting workers’ rights and addressing their challenges.
