India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan following a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that killed 26 people, including one foreign national.
The decision came after the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) reviewed intelligence findings linking the April 22 attack to cross-border elements.
The CCS, India’s top national security body, approved strict measures against Pakistan.
According to Indian media reports, terrorists opened fire around 3 PM at Baisaran, a tourist hotspot near Pahalgam where at least 26 individuals, including an Indian Navy officer and an Intelligence Bureau personnel, lost their lives.
Baisaran, located six kilometers from Pahalgam and known as “mini Switzerland” for its scenic beauty, was packed with tourists when the attack occurred. Authorities fear the toll may rise.
This marks one of the deadliest attacks in the region in recent years.
India’s suspension of the water-sharing treaty signals rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, and could have far-reaching diplomatic consequences.
