GT road to get major upgrade soon

GT Road upgrade

The federal government has approved a major upgrade for the Grand Trunk (GT) Road (N-5), aiming to convert it into a modern three-lane carriageway.

This decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by the Federal Minister for Communications, Abdul Aleem Khan, focusing on improving travel efficiency and road safety.

The National Highway Authority (NHA) will lead the project in two phases. The first phase is expected to finish within the current fiscal year.

GT Road, which connects Karachi to Torkham, is Pakistan’s longest national highway and a vital route for north-south trade and passenger movement.

Senior officials from communications, economic affairs, and planning departments shared recommendations for the road’s expansion and restoration during the meeting.

Abdul Aleem Khan stressed the need to upgrade the road district by district to reduce travel delays and enhance road conditions across regions.

The federal minister instructed departments to ensure regular inspections and propose cost-effective, sustainable solutions to avoid delays and unnecessary expenses.

He criticized past infrastructure projects for being financially unviable, saying they caused major economic losses and burdened the national treasury unnecessarily.

This GT Road upgrade is intended to provide long-lasting quality without financial waste, and strict monitoring will be carried out to ensure full transparency.

The upgraded road will support safer travel, boost connectivity, and improve logistics for trade and commuters, especially between key cities and economic zones.

With better planning and regular oversight, officials hope to transform this crucial highway into a more efficient and modern transport route for everyone.
