An alarming surge in temperatures across northern Pakistan has prompted disaster management authorities to issue a flood alert for several mountainous areas.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has raised serious concerns that continued heat may cause glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), particularly in northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.
According to the PDMA, regions such as Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, and Upper Dir are most vulnerable.
The agency warned that rapid glacial melting could lead to sudden flooding, endangering lives and infrastructure of the region.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department also confirmed the temperature spike and warned of possible lake bursts in these areas, adding that intense heat is speeding up glacier melt, which could escalate into emergency situations.
