80-year-old defies odds, earns PhD in journalism

PhD at age 80

Age proved no barrier for Saeed Masood Usmani, who received his PhD in Mass Communication from Federal Urdu University at the age of 80, despite serious health challenges.

Usmani, who suffered four heart attacks and one stroke, continued his academic journey, completing his research under the supervision of renowned scholar Professor Dr Tauseef Ahmed Khan.

His thesis, “Popularity of FM Radio Broadcasting in Karachi and Analytical Study of Audience,” earned praise from both local and international academic examiners.

The 66th meeting of the Graduate Research Management Council awarded the PhD after a successful public defense of his thesis.

His study explored FM radio’s social and cultural influence in Karachi, using a sample size of nearly 5,126 respondents across all genders and districts of the city.

An impressive 86 percent credited FM radio with providing awareness during emergencies, while 80 percent said it helped in developing language skills.

Usmani, known in academic circles as a walking “encyclopedia,” has spent a life steeped in reading, activism, and political struggle.

Dr Usmani’s journey reflects a timeless truth – education has no age limit, and passion for knowledge can defy the most difficult odds.
