Sindh seeks US expertise as fire in Karachi rages unabated for 18 days

Karachi Korangi fire

The government of Sindh sought help from US experts as the fire, which began during drilling work, has been burning for 18 days near Karachi’s Korangi area.

Experts believe that chemical buildup underground sparked the blaze, meanwhile, the fire has shown no signs of slowing down despite multiple efforts from the local system.

In response, the Sindh government has approached American experts, working with US–based Cudd Well Control to find ways to stop the fire.

A federal committee was also formed last week to investigate, while the Ministry of Petroleum took charge of organizing technical and international firefighting support.

Teams from Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and United Energy Pakistan visited the site, and confirmed that the fire’s intensity is still high and unmanageable.

Meanwhile, hot water continues to leak from underground, further fueling concerns. Experts also noted that the borehole where the fire began has expanded in size.

The Sindh government is considering filling the borehole with cement. If this fails, a new well may be drilled to reach the gas source.

The authorities are requested to provide modern equipment to measure gas levels and heat. Accurate data will help determine the right technique to end the fire.

This Karachi fire also highlights a much deeper issue, as the fire safety systems of the metropolis are outdated and ineffective in handling such emergencies.

A fire audit in November 2023 exposed the problem. Over 60 percent of commercial buildings lack fire exits or working firefighting systems citywide.
