Karachi: 17,000 street crimes reported in three months

Karachi street crimes

Nearly 17,000 street crime incidents were reported in Karachi during the first three months of 2025, as per data released by the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

The CPLC data reveals that from January 1 to March 31, a total of 16,977 crimes took place. These included 4,298 mobile phones snatched, 11,982 motorcycles stolen, and 537 cars either snatched or stolen.

The report also highlighted other serious crimes, including four cases of kidnapping and 24 extortion incidents in just one month. Tragically, the rising crime wave also led to the loss of 132 lives, including 26 people who were killed while resisting robberies.

Despite the alarming numbers, the performance of law enforcement agencies, especially investigative officers, has remained underwhelming. Specialized units responsible for tracking robbery cases have failed to show significant progress.

The wave of violence continues across the city. In one incident today, a 22-year-old man named Manzoor was shot dead in Landhi’s Moeenabad after resisting robbers who tried to snatch his belongings.

In another similar case, Saadullah Malik, a factory worker, was killed in Korangi’s Zaman Town. According to police, the young man tried to chase down robbers who were harassing children in his neighborhood. He managed to catch one of the suspects, but was shot and killed during the scuffle.

Both victims were shifted to local hospitals for medico-legal procedures.

Residents across Karachi have expressed growing fear and frustration as street crime spirals out of control. Many are demanding stronger police presence, quicker investigations, and stricter enforcement to ensure public safety.
