Pakistan forms delegation to engage with US over 29pc tariff

Pakistan US trade

In response to the recent imposition of a 29 percent tariff by the United States on Pakistani goods, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has announced the formation of a high-level delegation to engage Washington in trade negotiations.

During a press conference, Aurangzeb stated that the delegation will explore ways to minimize the adverse effects of the tariff hike while seeking broader economic cooperation.

“We are taking this challenge as an opportunity to strengthen trade ties with the U.S.,” he said, adding that a strategic approach is being adopted.

A 12-member steering committee and a working group have already been set up to prepare a detailed response. Their findings will soon be presented to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The committee will assess the competitiveness of Pakistan’s exports – especially textiles – and recommend viable trade and policy solutions.

While emphasizing Pakistan’s intention to engage in constructive dialogue, the finance minister clarified that no immediate relief package for local industries is under consideration.

He stated that the government’s primary goal is to mitigate the economic impact through diplomatic and trade channels.

The steering committee includes key government figures such as the ministers for commerce and petroleum, the FBR chairman, the foreign secretary, Pakistan’s ambassador to the U.S., and a former ambassador to the WTO.

This initiative signals Pakistan’s intent to diplomatically address trade concerns and ensure the resilience of its export-driven industries amid global economic shifts.
