Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Humayun Khan said that the Korangi Creek fire, which has been burning for more than seven days, shows no signs of being fueled by large underground reserve.
Speaking to media, Khan said that the intensity of the flames and the water emerging from the ground has reduced significantly, indicating the absence of any major fuel reservoir beneath the surface.
“The fire could technically be put out within an hour,” he stated, “but doing so might release trapped gases, which could prove hazardous for the surrounding area.”
The fire, which broke out in Karachi’s Korangi area, continues to burn underground.
Experts say such fires are not uncommon and are often allowed to self-extinguish over a period of up to a month due to the risks involved in forced extinguishing.
Khan also mentioned that the official report on the fire’s cause and extent has been delayed due to Eid holidays, but it is expected to be submitted by Monday.
He reiterated that while the fire remains under control, authorities are monitoring the area carefully to prevent any escalation or health risks for nearby residents.
