US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered stricter investigations before issuing visas to student applicants. He has directed diplomats to examine the social media activity of applicants before granting visas.
Rubio stated that the purpose of this policy is to prevent individuals who criticize the United States and Israel from entering the country.
The new directive means that visa officers will now assess an applicant’s online presence, including posts, comments, and shared content.
While supporters argue this step enhances national security, critics warn it could lead to discrimination and suppression of free speech.
Further details on how these investigations will be conducted and their impact on visa approvals remain unclear.
However, the decision signals tighter restrictions on international students applying to US institutions.

Earlier to this, a senior US diplomat has clarified that the Trump administration’s visa review policy is not Pakistan-specific, but rather a global measure.
Margaret MacLeod, a US State Department official based in London, stated that President Donald Trump has ordered a comprehensive review of visa policies across all countries, emphasizing that the policy is meant to protect US national security and is not aimed at Pakistan alone.
“Several unverified reports have surfaced, but the fact is that only a review is taking place,” she said. “President Trump signed a Presidential Order for the US foreign office to review all visa categories.”
She also highlighted Trump’s acknowledgment of Pakistan in his State of the Union address, particularly after a wanted man was extradited to the US.
