Edhi foundation donates $4M equipment to JPMC for free cancer treatment

Edhi Cancer Treatment JPMC

The Edhi Foundation is funding $4 million worth of advanced breast cancer treatment equipment for Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

The new Breast Radiation Bay, named after Abdul Sattar and Bilquis Edhi, will offer free treatment starting in April 2026.

The facility will be jointly operated by the Patients Aid Foundation (PAF) and the Sindh government.

It will feature state-of-the-art Helix Tomotherapy units, capable of treating 160 patients daily with precise radiation therapy that minimizes exposure to healthy tissues.

Pakistan reports around 30,000 new breast cancer cases annually, with many requiring surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

However, access to radiation therapy remains limited due to outdated equipment and high costs.

The new facility will introduce cutting-edge technologies like Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) and Deep Inhalation Breath Hold (DIBH), which are not yet available in Pakistan.

The Sindh government has committed to covering repair and maintenance costs beyond the initial warranty period to ensure smooth operations.

JPMC, through a public-private partnership with PAF, has expanded its capacity from 1,100 to 2,208 beds, with 600 more under development.

It remains the only center in the world offering free cancer treatment with advanced technology, having treated patients from 167 Pakistani cities and 15 countries.
