Around 70 percent of government flats in Landhi, meant for provincial employees, have been illegally occupied by Afghan nationals and criminals, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Sindh Assembly was informed earlier this week.
During a review of the audit records of the Works and Services Department, it was revealed that despite the illegal occupation, the provincial government had spent millions of rupees on the repair and maintenance of these flats.
PAC Chairman Nisar Khuhro expressed grave concern over the issue and ordered an investigation into the expenditure of public funds on occupied flats.
He questioned why government property worth billions of rupees had not been reclaimed from the illegal occupants.
The Works and Services Secretary informed the PAC that the department’s responsibility was only to construct and repair the flats, while the home department was responsible for vacating them.
The chief engineer further stated that the government provided 321 flats for provincial employees, but 70 percent were taken over by Afghans and criminals.
The PAC directed the services secretary to submit a report on the progress of efforts to reclaim the government flats.
