Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced that 29 chlorination centers are being set up at a cost of Rs 290 million to prevent waterborne diseases.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Kidney Hill Chlorination Pumping Station on Tuesday, he emphasized that chlorination will help control diseases like Naegleria.
The remaining centers will become operational after Ramazan.
Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, and other PPP leaders attended the event.
Mayor Wahab also addressed Karachi’s parking issues, particularly on I.I. Chundrigar Road, blaming Pakistan Railways for not handing over designated land to the Stock Exchange since 1995.
He revealed that their anti-encroachment team faced gunfire the previous night and criticized Preedy Police Station as they’ve failed to act.
He urged law enforcement to tackle drug trafficking and smuggling more effectively.
Additionally, Wahab announced the termination of all parking contracts by June 30, stating that no new contracts will be issued. He also shared plans to treat 35 million gallons per day (MGD) of water at Gutter Baghicha and purify seawater through a public-private partnership, with 14 companies expressing interest.
