The Federal Sharia Court has ruled that the traditions of Chadar and Parchi, which deprive women of inheritance rights, are un-Islamic and illegal.
The full court, led by Chief Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman and including Justice Khadim M. Sheikh, Justice Dr. Muhammad Anwar, and Justice Amir Muhammad, issued the decision.
The court stressed that such rituals violate Islamic teachings and the inheritance rights granted to women in the Quran and Sunnah.
According to the court, depriving women of property due to social pressure contradicts both Islamic injunctions and legal provisions.
The judgment ordered action against violators under Section 498 and stressed the need for greater awareness and enforcement of laws protecting women’s inheritance rights.
The court was informed that the Chadar and Parchi rituals are practiced in Bannu, but the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government claimed these traditions are neither widely followed nor possess any significance. The ruling stated that women were also deprived of inheritance before Islam under similar traditions.
