Total lunar eclipse 2025: When and where to watch ‘Blood Moon’

Total lunar eclipse 2025

A total lunar eclipse, often called a ‘Blood Moon,’ will grace the night sky on March 13-14, 2025. This will be the first total lunar eclipse since 2022, with the moon turning a deep red as it passes through Earth’s shadow.

Where Will It Be Visible?

The eclipse will be visible across the night side of the Earth. The best views will be in North and South America, while parts of Europe and Africa may see the eclipse at moonset.

In Asia, including Pakistan, the event will occur at moonrise, meaning only some parts of the eclipse may be visible, depending on local conditions.

Eclipse Timings in Pakistan

For skywatchers in Pakistan, the eclipse will begin in the early hours of March 14, 2025. The timings (Pakistan Standard Time – PKT) are as follows:

  • Penumbral phase begins: 8:57 AM PKT
  • Partial eclipse starts: 10:09 AM PKT
  • Total eclipse (Blood Moon): 11:26 AM – 12:31 PM PKT
  • Partial eclipse ends: 1:47 PM PKT
  • Penumbral phase ends: 3:00 PM PKT

Since the eclipse will occur during daytime in Pakistan, it may not be fully visible. However, parts of the event might be observed as the moon sets in the morning.

How to Watch the Lunar Eclipse?

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. No special equipment is needed, but binoculars or a telescope can enhance the view.

Will the Weather Affect Visibility?

Clear skies are crucial for an unobstructed view of the eclipse. In March, some regions of Pakistan may have cloudy weather, so skywatchers should check forecasts before planning to watch the eclipse.

What is a ‘Blood Moon’?

During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth blocks direct sunlight from reaching the moon. However, some light bends around Earth’s atmosphere, scattering blue wavelengths and allowing red light to illuminate the moon – giving it a reddish or ‘Blood Moon’ appearance.
