Sindh seeks Balochistan’s help to arrest Shahzain Marri in Karachi assault case

The Sindh police have sought assistance from the Balochistan government to arrest tribal leader Shahzain Marri, whose guards were arrested last week for allegedly torturing a citizen in Karachi’s Boat Basin area.

The Sindh police have sought assistance from the Balochistan government to arrest tribal leader Shahzain Marri, whose guards were arrested last week for allegedly torturing a citizen in Karachi’s Boat Basin area.

The request follows the arrest of five guards, who were seen in a viral video assaulting two men in a white car in Boat Basin.

Sindh Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon has written to the provincial home secretary, urging coordination with authorities to apprehend Marri and another suspect, Ghulam Qadir, who reportedly fled to Balochistan.

The case was filed by Sindh People’s Youth Organisation member Barkat Ali Soomro, who reported that armed men, allegedly intoxicated, attacked him and his friend with pistol butts.

Following the arrests, modern weapons were recovered from the guards, and police are now verifying their licenses.

According to South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza, the prime suspect, Shahzain Marri, is the grandson of late Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Khair Bux Marri.

The arrested guards were employed by Marri, who – along with his security men – assaulted a citizen before fleeing to Balochistan.

In response, IG Memon formally requested the Sindh government to approach Balochistan authorities for the arrests of Marri and Ghulam Qadir.

DIG Raza’s letter urged the Sindh police chief to seek assistance from his Balochistan counterpart to facilitate the arrest of Marri and Qadir.

The Case

The FIR detailed that at 3 am on February 19, Soomro and his friend Waqas Ahmed were driving when a Surf jeep came from behind. Despite giving way, the jeep reversed and hit their car, after which five to six armed suspects stepped out.

The FIR further stated that the suspects appeared alleged intoxicated, assaulted Soomro and Ahmed, issued threats, and beat them with pistol butts, injuring Soomro.

A video of the incident went viral last week, showing a four-by-four vehicle ramming an Alto car in Boat Basin. Several armed men exited the vehicle and attacked Soomro and Waqas.

DIG Raza confirmed on Friday that operations are ongoing to arrest other suspects involved in the attack.

He also stated that modern weapons had been recovered from the arrested guards, and authorities are examining whether the arms were licensed.
