Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik believes the national team can still defeat India despite losing to New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 opener at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium.
Speaking on Shoaib Akhtar’s YouTube channel (via The Indian Express), Malik remained hopeful about Pakistan’s chances in their must-win game against India on Sunday.
“I believe we still have a chance to beat India in our next match and then move forward against Bangladesh,” Malik said. “Our morale and confidence are down, but the team’s character remains strong.”
He emphasized that Pakistan has the talent to overcome India but acknowledged the pressure of the high-stakes encounter. He urged senior players to take charge.
“The potential is there, but it’s now their responsibility. The seniors must step up because this will be a high-pressure game,” he added. “It’s a do-or-die situation. Winning against India would make any player an instant superstar. The opportunity is there; they must seize it.”
In the tournament opener, defending champions Pakistan lost to New Zealand by 60 runs. Chasing 321, they were bowled out for 260. Khushdil Shah top-scored with 69 off 49 balls, while Babar Azam contributed 64 from 90 deliveries.
For New Zealand, Will Young and Tom Latham both hit centuries, while Glenn Phillips’ quickfire 61 off 39 balls boosted their total.
Pakistan must now beat India to keep their title defense alive.
