Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), has announced plans to launch the country’s first lunar rover in 2028.
The rover will be part of China’s Chang’E 8 mission, which aims to explore the lunar South Pole. This collaboration follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Pakistan and China.
The rover, developed by SUPARCO, will carry scientific equipment designed by Pakistani scientists, as well as a joint payload from Chinese and European researchers.
SUPARCO has also launched a nationwide competition to name the rover, with a prize of Rs100,000 for the winner.
This mission builds on Pakistan’s previous space success, including the 2022 launch of its first lunar satellite aboard China’s Chang’e-6 probe, which successfully landed on the Moon’s far side and returned lunar samples.
The Pakistan-China space partnership continues to strengthen, with both countries advancing in space technology and exploration.
