Sindh government has announced a crackdown on unregistered vehicles, which is set to begin tomorrow [Monday].
Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon confirmed the move during a press conference, stating that showroom owners will be prohibited from releasing vehicles without proper registration, failing to comply with the directives the showroom will be sealed.
Additionally, the government has decided to target physically unfit vehicles across the province.
Mandatory motor vehicle inspections will be enforced for heavy vehicles, including dumpers, trucks, buses, and trailers.
To support these measures, the Sindh government plans to establish four motor vehicle inspection centers in Karachi.
During the press conference, the minister confirmed that the tax on double-cabin vehicles whether it is commercial or personal, the user has to pay the same registration tax as set by the government.
To curb rising road accidents, Memon stated that all vehicles, including bikes, cars, and heavy vehicles, must obtain a fitness certificate to operate in Karachi.
The Transport Department will oversee this certification process, and vehicles from other provinces must secure Sindh’s fitness certificate before entering.
Authorities have given heavy traffic vehicles 30 days to comply with these requirements.
Memon stated that the vehicles that pass the check will receive barcodes, which will be mandatory for operation. Additionally, unregistered vehicles will be banned, and new cars cannot leave showrooms without registration, meanwhile, the showrooms found involved in violation will be sealed.
The Karachi Water Board has introduced a barcode system for its tankers, allowing only certified tankers to operate.
He further announced that the authorities are directed to take strict action against fake number plates and drivers without valid licenses while restricting underage driving, and violators will be arrested.
The Sindh government has also restricted private security personnel from displaying weapons, except for uniformed police officers.
