Honor Killings: Pakistan reports 319 cases in 2024

The tragic killing of four women by a family member in Karachi’s Le Market area last October has highlighted the growing issue of honor killings in Pakistan.

The accused explained that he was upset by the women’s independence, late-night outings, and social media use, although other family members suggested the violence was due to property disputes.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 392 women were killed in the name of honor across the country from January to November 2024.

The majority of honor killing cases were reported in Punjab (168) and Sindh (151), while other troubling statistics include 1,969 rape cases, 299 domestic violence incidents, 30 burnings, and 43 acid attacks during the same period.

Sheema Kirmani, founder of Tehrik-e-Niswan, suggests that more cases are being reported due to growing awareness, fueled by non-governmental organizations advocating for women’s rights.

In the past, women lacked education and opportunities, and many didn’t know they had the right to speak out against abuse. However, increasing awareness is encouraging more women to report violence.

Journalist Lubna Jarrar Naqvi, who specializes in gender-based violence, notes that despite more cases being reported, the actual number is likely much higher, as many people still do not understand that such acts are crimes.

She also emphasizes that many women believe domestic violence is a private matter and fail to recognize it as a criminal act.

Both Sheema Kirmani and Lubna Jarrar agree that honor killings and violence will persist unless the state enforces stricter laws and works to change deep-rooted societal attitudes.

According to Lubna, societal education is critical, particularly in teaching boys that anger cannot justify violence.

It’s crucial to instill the understanding that men and women are equal and that violence, in any form, is never acceptable.
