The CEO of Meta – Mark Zuckerberg – announced that the company will phase out its fact-checking program, replacing it with a new feature called “community notes,” inspired by the social media platform X.
The change is part of Meta’s effort to promote “free expression” and simplify content moderation, according to Zuckerberg.
In a video shared on Facebook, Zuckerberg explained that the company is returning to its “roots” by focusing on free speech, criticizing governments and the media for pushing for increased censorship.
He acknowledged that the previous fact-checking systems led to “too many mistakes” and “too much censorship.”
Zuckerberg also highlighted the recent U.S. elections as a pivotal moment for Meta, which he believes signaled a shift towards prioritizing free speech over stringent content moderation.
This shift, which will begin in the U.S., marks a significant change in how Meta handles online content and moderation moving forward, Zuckerberg added.
