Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan should be released from prison, according to Richard Grenell, a former U.S. ambassador and special envoy chosen by President-elect Donald Trump.
Speaking on the US news outlet, Grenell expressed his desire to see Khan free from prison, comparing his situation to that of Trump, saying both leaders were imprisoned under similar allegations of corruption and false charges from ruling parties.
Grenell emphasized that Khan, like Trump, was an outsider when he became prime minister, a former cricket player who wasn’t a traditional politician.
He also highlighted the strong relationship between Khan and Trump during the Trump administration, noting that they had a “very good relationship” due to Khan’s straightforward, common-sense approach to politics.
Grenell also criticized the Biden administration’s handling of Pakistan, stating that issues like nuclear weapons and missile development in Pakistan were only being addressed now, near the end of Biden’s term, after years of neglect.
He mentioned that Pakistan’s growing missile capabilities, which could potentially reach the U.S., would be a major challenge for the incoming Trump administration.
He stated that countries with nuclear weapons, like Pakistan, require a strategic approach in dealings, underscoring the importance of how the U.S. handles its relationship with nuclear-armed nations.
