Report reveals huge surge in fake news during PTI’s Islamabad rally

A significant increase in fake news was observed during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in Islamabad from November 24-27, 2024, according to a report by the Fake News Watchdog.

The non-profit organization revealed that the spread of misinformation during this period had severe political and social consequences, tarnishing Pakistan’s global reputation.

The report outlined how doctored videos, manipulated images, and fabricated statements influenced public opinion and fueled tensions.

The fake news watchdog report included a fake statement attributed to the interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, regarding Kashmiri citizens, false reports of arrests involving Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Imran Khan’s wife, and baseless claims of casualties at Islamabad hospitals.

The watchdog stressed that the role of social media was particularly detrimental, with its speed and reach enabling false narratives to spread rapidly.

Additionally, lapses in journalistic integrity by mainstream media further exacerbated the problem, lending credibility to unverified reports.

Notable fabricated stories included rumors of PTI leader Asad Qaiser being named party chairman, fake accounts inciting protests, and unfounded claims of youth resigning from army academies.

Even incidents like an alleged worker’s death during the protest turned out to be false, highlighting the systematic spread of disinformation during the specific time period.

The watchdog called for urgent measures to combat the increasing of fake news, citing its impact on the government, security institutions, and political entities.

It stressed the need for enhanced fact-checking mechanisms and responsible journalism to prevent the manipulation of public sentiment.
