The rare Indus Dolphin, often called the Queen of the Indus River, has tragically died due to alleged negligence and mistreatment by local citizens.

The Sindh Wildlife Department has filed a murder case against two individuals under the Sindh Wildlife Protection Act 2020.

The dolphin, which had entered the Dadu Canal, was found dead near Gul Panhwar village, approximately 8 kilometers from Amb Mori (Phakka Distributary).

According to Conservator Sindh Wildlife, Javed Mehar, the dolphin was forcibly removed from the canal by miscreants, who took pictures and uploaded them on social media.

This act caused the animal’s skin to dry out, leading to its death.

A team from the Sindh Wildlife Department inspected the site, collected evidence, and launched a rescue mission, unfortunately, the dolphin could not be saved.

Under the Wildlife Protection Act, those found guilty of this crime could face up to five years in prison and a fine of Rs 750,000.

The case will proceed in the District and Sessions Court of Dadu.

The Indus Dolphin is a critically endangered species, native to Pakistan’s Indus River. Their population has been under severe threat due to habitat destruction, pollution, and human interference.
