Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday inaugurated the solar energy project recently installed at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) main building.
This makes KMC the first council in Pakistan to transition entirely to solar power, marking a significant milestone in sustainable energy adoption.
Mayor Wahab stated that 259 solar panels installed on the KMC building’s rooftop will generate 650 to 700 units of electricity daily.
This switch is expected to reduce the KMC’s financial burden by saving millions of rupees annually, meanwhile, the excess electricity generated will be sold to the national grid, further boosting the revenue.
The initiative is part of a broader push to implement renewable energy solutions across the city.

Three major highways in Karachi are also being equipped with solar systems, alongside the completed installation of panels at Kidney Hill Park.
Mayor Wahab announced plans to expand the initiative to include more parks, recreational spaces, and highways in the near future.
“Global cities are shifting towards alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power, and Karachi must follow suit. With our favorable climate, we have immense potential to harness solar energy efficiently,” Mayor Wahab said.
Efforts like these, he added, would reduce dependence on traditional energy sources and create long-term economic and environmental benefits.
