In Karachi, the seven-year record of citizens being killed for resisting robbery has been broken as 2022 comes to an end.
Resistance to dacoits in the city has led to as many as 102 citizen killings for resisting robbery in different areas. Most civilians were targeted in the Central District, these people include SAMAA TV’s senior producer Athar Mateen, who was killed in North Nazimabad on February 18. Another citizen Zeeshan, who came from the UK, was also killed in front of his family in Gulistan Johar this year.
The statistics of 102 killings bcomes shocking when compared with 2021 where the number of such killings was 64. According to the report, in the year 2020, 56 civilians were killed due to resistance. In 2019, 44 people were shot, in 2018, 54 people were shot, while in 2017, 54 people were shot and in 2016, 73 people were shot by robbers.
Not only did the citizens lose their lives, but more than 85,000 citizens also lost their vehicles, motorcycles and mobile phones. This year, there has been a 10% increase in motorcycle snatching and theft incidents.
This year 56,650 citizens lost their motorcycles, while the last year 2021 this number was 50,841. Incidents of vehicle theft have also increased by 10 per cent this year as compared to 2021. In the year 2022, 2211 citizens lost their vehicles while last year 2094 lost their vehicles.
According to the report, mobile phones were confiscated from more than 26 thousand 300 citizens this year, while last year this number was 25 thousand 180.
