An estimated five million people in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, lack access to safe drinking water. However, MD Water Board says there is no crisis in the city.
In this regard, sources have claimed that the water crisis is still going on in different parts of Karachi. Landhi, Korangi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shah Faisal Colony and Gulshan-e-Iqbal are affected.
In addition, residents of North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Orangi Town and other areas are longing for a drop of water.
Experts say that 40% of the water supplied to the city is stolen which is then being sold back to the citizens at high prices.
On the other hand, MD Water Board is of the view that there is no water crisis in the city. Karachi is being provided 503 million gallons of water daily from the Indus River.
According to the MD Water Board, 16% of Karachi’s water is being wasted. A spokesman for the Water Board said that there is a shortfall of 500 million gallons of water in the city.
It is to be noted that water shortage has intensified in Sindh. Sukkur, Guddu and Kotri barrages are facing water shortage which has intensified the water supply crisis in Shar-e-Quaid.
According to sources, experts have said that there is a crisis of drinking water along with agricultural water due to lack of rains in the upper areas for which important steps have to be taken.
