Forest dept, urban forest reach agreement to increase Karachi’s greenery by 25%

An agreement has been reached between the Urban Forest and the Forest Department to raise Karachi’s tree cover from 1% to 25%. Under the agreement, the Forest Department will provide three crore saplings.

The total area of Karachi is 3 thousand km, and the tree cover is only one per cent of that. To raise this number to 25%, 7 crore trees will be planted. This is expected to improve the city’s climate and air quality.

Polluted air is considered to be the biggest threat to our health in this era of climate change, and experts say that if Karachi’s green cover is successfully increased, then the climate will improve in the next 5 to 10 years.
