Police chief launches plan to combat fatal accidents in Karachi

Karachi’s police chief, Javed Alam Odho, has expressed grave concern over the rising number of fatal traffic accidents in the city, with every second accident proving to be fatal.

In response, the police chief has announced a two-phase plan aimed at reducing accidents in the metropolis.

The first phase will focus on an awareness campaign, while the second phase will involve stricter enforcement actions.

Odho explained that while street criminals are being apprehended in large numbers, many citizens who have managed to avoid criminal activity are now becoming victims of traffic accidents, which led to the opening of a new challenge for the authorities.

The police chief revealed that this year, approximately 900 accidents were reported, with more than 50 percent of them being fatal.

A significant portion of these accidents (57 percent) involved were motorcyclists, and 75 percent of these riders were found to be riding without helmets.

He also highlighted the alarming statistic that 4.2 million out of 6.5 million vehicles in Karachi are motorcycles, with many young riders driving without licenses.

In response to these concerns, the police have already arrested over 7,000 drivers this year, and 400 cases have been registered in the last two months for reckless driving.

The authorities are intensifying their efforts by increasing the number of registered cases and the fines imposed.

According to Odho, the awareness campaign will continue for a while, but once it concludes, more stringent measures will be implemented.
