The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a World Bank-funded project worth Rs 29.2 billion to improve Karachi’s solid waste infrastructure.

The decision came during a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad.

This project is part of a broader package of ten initiatives approved by ECNEC, totaling Rs 172.7 billion.

These projects focus on infrastructure development to enhance connectivity and services in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh, with six projects dedicated to Balochistan.

Another significant approval includes Rs 52.7 billion for the establishment of the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment & Research in Lahore.

This 915-bed facility will offer affordable cancer care, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and palliative services.

The project will be financed through Punjab’s Annual Development Programme, meanwhile, one proposed project from the Ministry of Health was deferred for further clarification.

The Karachi solid waste project aims to address the city’s pressing garbage management issues, signaling a critical step toward improving urban infrastructure and public health.
