Surge in chicken, egg prices in Karachi

The prices of chicken meat and eggs in Karachi have surged significantly, leaving consumers struggling with the rising costs.

Over the past week, chicken meat prices have jumped from Rs 530 to Rs 660 per kilogram, with an increase of Rs 130 per kilogram.

Eggs are also seeing a sharp rise, with retail prices reaching Rs 380 per dozen, well above the official rate of Rs 344. In the wholesale market, local eggs are being traded for Rs 650 per dozen.

Poultry traders attribute the hike to supply issues and the expectation of increased demand as winter approaches, with the possibility of further price increases in future.

Residents, however, have voiced frustration over the unregulated price hikes, questioning the effectiveness of price control measures.

Earlier this month, the cost of various pulses in Pakistan’s wholesale market significantly decreased, bringing relief to consumers amid rising costs of general commodities.

According to the Wholesale Grocers Association, the price of black peas has dropped by Rs 50 per kg since September while previously selling at Rs 400 per kg, Chana Dal is now available for Rs 360 per kg and is expected to reach Rs 300 per kg by next month.

Similarly, the price of dal mash has decreased from Rs 500 per kg to Rs 425 per kg.

Globally, pulse prices have fallen by over $100 per ton, dropping from $860 to below $750 per ton.

Association’s chairman, Rauf Ibrahim, attributes this drop to reduced demand from major buyers like India and Sri Lanka.
