Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Minister for Local Bodies Nasir Hussain Shah met Chairman Abdul Kadir Turan of the Turkish company, OZPAK J V, at the CM house.
The meeting was also attended by P&D chairperson Naheed Shah, KWSB DG Asadullah Khan and other officers concerned.
Speaking to the media, the CM confirmed that the company would be given the job of cleaning the city. This would involve door-to-door collection of garbage and segmentation into municipal waste, hospital and industrial waste.
The CM said he had plans to introduce an integrated waste management system under which collection, transfer to GTS, treatment and dumping at the final site would be put under a single umbrella. Six garbage transfer stations would also be constructed for this project where the garbage would be transported to. The waste at the final site would be burned in an environmentally friendly way.
The company expressed enthusiasm to be given the Karachi project and said they would work in Sindh on the PPP model. However, the CM stated that he would allocate the company two districts but only when the Turks submitted their proposal or participated in bidding.
Earlier, OZPAK J V had been given the contract to clean Lahore by the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC). The project was quite successful but undermined the capacity of local bodies.
The CM also approved allocation of money to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board to increase its capacity such that it provides sustainable and reliable services to all of its customers.
