Section 144  imposed over throwing trash in and around stormwater drains

Managing Director of Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, Amtiaz Ali Shah, has decided that garbage pickers will be sanctioned under Section 144 if found spreading garbage once it has been dumped at disposal sites.

Garbage pickers, after removing the useful items from dustbins, throw the leftovers outside the dustbin or in the drains, which pollutes the city and clogs the drains.

There is a complete ban on throwing garbage in the drains and surroundings. Therefore, legal action will be taken against the garbage pickers or anyone who throws garbage in the drains or beside them.

Another important decision taken in this regard is that garbage pickers will be made part of the sanitary workforce so that they can help in cleaning the city up rather than spreading more trash.

MD Solid Waste added that traders or shopkeepers who buy these items from waste pickers will also be targeted in order to stop garbage pickers from spreading trash. When no one will buy the tash fom them, they will have no choice but to stop.

He further instructed that in this regard, coordination will be done with the Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of Police of the concerned district and legal action will be taken upon detection.

“I also appeal to the citizens to cooperate and avoid throwing garbage in the drains and sides and to notify 1128 when you see people spreading garbage,” he said.
