After recounting ballots in five Karachi union councils (UCs), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidates were declared victors on Monday.
The electoral commission’s directions were followed, and the recounting of ballots was finished in five UCs in Karachi’s District West. Following the vote recount, the PPP candidates were declared winners once more.
Orangi Town had three union councils, and Maghopir and Mominabad each had one.
PPP’s Maqbool Khan won UC 3 Orangi Town, PPP’s Imran Shah won UC 7 Orangi Town, PPP’s Dilshad won UC 8 Orangi Town, PPP’s Hilal Saeed won UC 12 Maghopir, and PPP’s Ijaz Awan won UC 3 Mominabad.
The political party won the seats which was challenged by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). According to the District Returning Officer (DRO), the recounting of votes was conducted on ECP’s orders and the latest results were forwarded to the commission.
In a relevant development today, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday ordered Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to stop recounting of votes in six union councils (UCs) of Karachi.
According to details, IHC Judge Ijaz Ishaq issued the order on a petition filed by Jamat-e-Islami (JI), challenging the ECP’s order of vote-recount in six union councils (UCs) – five of Karachi West and one of Karachi East.
The IHC, in its written order, stated that the Election Commission’s March 22 decision of vote-recount was challenged. “The court was informed that the recount was scheduled to be held today in six union councils,” it said, adding that if the counting occurred today, the petition will become ineffective.
Barring the ECP from holding recount, the court issued pre-admission notice to Election Commission for April 29.
