The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has announced an increase in the monthly rent for gas meters from Rs40 to Rs500, following a recent hike in gas tariffs. The new charges apply even if customers do not use gas and will be applicable from January 2023. Customers will also have to pay three months’ backload in the account of meter rent and gas tariff. However, the increase in meter rent will not apply to customers consuming less than 0.9 cubic hectare in November-December.
In response to the increase, a spokesperson from OGRA stated that gas remains cheaper than alternative fuels like LPG, wood, and coal. However, citizens have criticized the decision to recover dues from consumers, citing it as unjust.
