The prayers came at a time when severe monsoon rains and flooding had affected more than half of the country, leaving thousands of people dead or injured and displacing large numbers of families.

According to data compiled by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) at the time, torrential monsoon rains had caused further casualties and property damage, taking the total number of people killed since the beginning of the rainy season to 1,033, while 1,527 people had been injured.

The disaster had affected 110 districts across Pakistan, with heavy monsoon rains causing extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

Large numbers of people were forced to leave their homes as floodwaters swept through communities and destroyed sources of livelihood.

The flooding also caused significant losses to livestock and agricultural land, raising concerns about the impact on food supplies and the wider economy.

Heavy rains and flooding destroyed standing crops across several parts of the country, threatening agricultural production and increasing concerns about a potential food security and economic crisis.

The destruction of crops and livestock also placed additional pressure on communities that depend heavily on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods.

The widespread devastation prompted relief and rescue operations across affected areas, with authorities and humanitarian organisations working to provide food, shelter and other essential supplies to flood-hit families.

The prayer by Sheikh Abdul Rehman Al-Sudais was seen as a significant moment of solidarity with the people affected by the devastating floods.
